A Valuable Arrival for the Conservation of an Endangered Subspecies

Zoo de Jurques is proud to welcome Girma, a young male Kordofan giraffe born on November 26, 2023, at the Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine. He joined our African plain on July 1, 2025, marking a major milestone in our commitment to preserving the Kordofan giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis antiquorum)—a subspecies classified as critically endangered by the IUCN.

A Transfer Within the European Breeding Programme (EEP)

Girma’s transfer is part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), coordinated by EAZA (the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria). This program works to maintain genetic diversity and protect threatened species while raising public awareness.
The transfer was handled by Crossborder, a company specializing in the safe and welfare-conscious transport of wild animals.

A Gentle Acclimatization to a New Home

Still a bit shy, Girma is slowly getting used to his new environment. Our dedicated animal care team is closely monitoring his adjustment and supporting him with patience and care. A second female giraffe will join him this autumn to form a breeding group in line with the EEP’s conservation goals.

A Quiet Invitation to Meet Him

On your next visit to Zoo de Jurques, we invite you to come and see Girma. Please remain calm and quiet near the African plain to avoid disturbing him during this sensitive acclimation period.

A Strong Commitment to Biodiversity

Girma’s arrival reflects our deep commitment to the protection of endangered wildlife. Every birth, transfer, and conservation project helps build a stronger future for biodiversity. The entire team at Zoo de Jurques is honored to take part in this mission and thrilled to introduce you to our new and iconic resident.
