A remarkable birth at Zoo de Jurques: a symbol of hope for vulture conservation

Séparateur de contenu 30/05/2025

🦅 On April 17th, 2025, Zoo de Jurques welcomed a rare and heartwarming event: the birth of a griffon vulture within our animal park. This is a historic first for our zoo and a true success for our breeding program.

A Milestone for Our Animal Care Team

After approximately 55 days of incubation, the young vulture hatched under the watchful eyes of both its parents. Since birth, it has been naturally fed through regurgitation, a typical behavior for this species. This process will continue for around 120 days until the young bird is strong enough to take its first flight.

This achievement highlights the dedication of our animal care team, who work tirelessly to ensure the wellbeing of the endangered species in our care.

A Birth That Serves Conservation Efforts

This birth is part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) coordinated by the EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria). The program aims to preserve threatened species, promote genetic diversity, and support reintroduction efforts in the wild.

Often misunderstood, the griffon vulture plays a key role in the ecosystem by cleaning up carcasses and helping prevent the spread of disease. Its conservation is vital to maintaining healthy natural environments.

A Majestic Species to Discover

You can now visit the young vulture in our vulture habitat, where it is being raised alongside its parents. This is a rare opportunity to witness the growth of this fascinating species, a true emblem of wild mountain landscapes.
